VALIDATION OF THE NAME, "MONTZ"

IN PREVIOUS STATEMENTS, IT WAS POINTED OUT THAT JOHANN Baptist Manz was the progenitor of all "Montz" families of Louisiana. It was also indicated that
the name was changed from "Manz" to "Montz," because of misspellings and other factors. Now, it can be stated that all Montz families in the country whose original descendants came from Louisiana are related, because of the unique name change, having taken place during the early eighteenth century. But, are all Montz families related? The answer is no.

AT THIS TIME IN THIS COUNTRY, THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 300-400 families by the last name of "Montz," who are related, and whose descendents came from Louisiana, dating back to 1721. The author scanned many telephone directories from across the nation in a particular time span and found very few families named "Montz" outside of Louisiana. This low number of total families generated over a period of about 250 years does lead to an assumption that only one or two persons of an original generation could have produced this small amount of population by the name
of "Montz." This bears out the fact that Deiler stated that there was only one progenitor of Montz families being Johann Baptist Manz.

THIS AUTHOR ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS COMMUNICATED WITH persons whose names were "Montz," but who were not related in any way to the families of Louisiana. One case was a gentleman who taught at Ohio State University by the name of John M. Montz. In a letter written to this author, he indicated that his great-grandfather was named John Mountz and he was a city clerk from Georgetown, District of Columbia, sometime around 1830-1850. John Mountz's son was a farmer near Winchester, Virginia, and served during the Civil War.  He indicated that his name changed during the turn of the century, and the reason is uncertain. (47)
