none too soon, as the Spanish General, Ulloa, left
Louisiana after running into tight resistance by French-German citizens. That same year, a French
armada sailed into New Orleans and regained control of the territories. (37)
EARLY RELIGIOUS FOUNDATIONS:
RELIGION WAS A VERY LARGE PART OF SOCIETY DURING THE establishment of the German Coast. It had to be!! With so
many hardships and events occurring, the common man had only his God to rely on for Faith and Hope. Life
was lived only for the day, with tomorrow taken care of by itself.
THE FIRST CHURCH TO BE ESTABLISHED IN THE TERRITORY WAS at the same location as the now present St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. The records of the Cathedral date
to 1720, and contain many German names.
THE FIRST CHAPEL TO BE ESTABLISHED ALONG THE GERMAN COAST was in St. Charles Parish, near a town called, "Le
Sassier." In the Church budget of 1729, provisions were made to have a priest by the name of Pater Phillips
to reside at the chapel permanently.(38)
THE FIRST CHURCH TO BE ESTABLISHED ON THE RIGHT BANK OF THE Mississippi River was the "Red Church," located
twenty-five miles above New Orleans, and established in 1740. In 1806 the Church burned to the ground, but
was rebuilt by the second "Red Church." In 1877, all records of the second Red Church were destroyed by a
fire.
IN 1771, ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH WAS BUILT IN EDGARD ON the left bank of the River. As time went on, another
Church was built in 1820 and took the place of the first Church erected. This Church was erected in Reserve,
across the river from Edgard. In 1864, the name of the Church was named St. Peters. It was this Church
by coincidence, that was whole-ly or partially designed by Andre Montz, an architect, from New
Orleans. (39)
